Solar
pool blankets are, for some, one of the greatest money-saving inventions
when it comes to pools and knowing how to use them. But if you are among
those who haven’t made up their minds, educate yourself using
online resources and decide for yourself.
All you really need to cover your pool is a basic plastic pool blanket,
made of plastic and reasonably priced. However, large plastic sheets
are hard to store, are easily torn and do not hold up well to sunlight,
or cold weather at all. UV rays from the sun will actually quickly destroy
plastic sheets. Additionally, a basic pool blanket is in no way designed
for safety purposes; if you have small children or dogs or cats, you
are going to need something more secure to cover your pool.
Solar pool blankets are a viable option for people looking to keep
their pool warm, save money on energy costs and chemicals through lost
through evaporation, and not be destroyed after one season.
There is a type of solar blanket or cover that is made of a substance
similar to the bubble packing materials. The biggest difference is that
specially designed solar pool blankets use a thicker grade of plastic
and are equipped with UV inhibitors.
There are many other options available as well. Vinyl covers are also
fairly popular and used pretty regularly. One of the biggest advantages
of these covers over solar pool blankets is the fact that vinyl is thicker
and designed to last longer.
Despite this, the vinyl covers lack in one area that solar pool blankets
do not -- productivity. Not only do the solar pullovers protect the
pool water from things like bugs, leaves and other debris, but they
also are able to heat the pool by a significant amount.
A solar cover is able to actually increase the heat of the pool water
without using an actual heater. That is because these covers are specifically
designed to be able to use the sun to increase the heat in the pool.
A heater allows you to control the temperature more precisely, though,
and works best when used together with a solar cover.
A solar cover includes a transparent opening on the top that attracts
sunlight. Once the light enters into the pool area, the cover or blanket
traps that heat inside the pool water. The next time you remove the
blanket, you will find your pool is several degrees warmer than the
last time you were in the water.
As you make decisions about blankets and covers, you may also want
to think about what kinds of covers you want. Some that are automatic,
while others are semi-automatic and still others are manually reeled
on and off the pool. This choice does really affect a cover’s
ability to heat pool water, but it could make your life a little easier
if you choose to use automated covers and it is within your budget.
