Pool solar covers might resemble giant bubble wrap, but they are constructed using a thick-grade plastic with UV-inhibitors. Solar covers or blankets are akin to getting free heat from the sun and they remain the most cost-effective way to reduce heating and chemical needs. Trying to heat a pool without using a solar cover is a bit like trying to heat a home with the windows and doors all open. As much as 70% of heat loss from a pool is due to evaporation.

Pool solar covers are purchased on a big roll that can be cut to fit your pool shape. It is trendy to buy a clear or blue one, but absorbent colors maximize effectiveness even more. A black cover soaks up more heat from the sun. A silver color transmits heat to the water faster.

However, pool solar covers are not designed for safety or cleanliness, so don't rely on them to prevent accidents involving children or animals. Like all covers, solar covers must be completely removed before swimming. The best way of dealing with a solar blanket is to put it on a reel. Reels can be manual, on wheels, or electronic and are a convenient way to quickly remove and replace covers on the pool.
