A
pool skimmer can be automatic, running all the time, or one can follow
a more old-fashioned approach – a pool leaf net or rake, which
are manually operated, do similar work. Automatic skimmers are usually
preferred because they are less work to operate. However, automatic
styles might not be available within every budget.
The automatic pool skimmer is a convenient piece of suction-style equipment
used for sucking up visible bits of debris (such as leaves) out of your
pool water. It is meant to catch the debris before it floats to the
bottom and becomes more difficult and labor-intensive to remove. Automatic
models contain a basket inside that catches the debris, which must be
cleaned and checked daily.
A leaf rake or net is usually sold with a "tele pole" that
is physically dragged just below the water's surface to retrieve leaves
and other refuse. A tele pole is extendable and will lock into place.
There are a variety of attachments that can be used with the tele pole,
but the basic leaf rake or mesh net are the most popular. Many pool
owners utilize a combination of pool skimmer techniques to keep the
pool looking its very best.
