Pool heaters

Pool heaters are among some of the most simple, yet complex items in your pool. It is certain that these items are necessary if you want to extend the swim season.

As with any useful device, there are certainly problems and malfunctions that can arise. But when problems occur, you can be prepared, fix them quickly and get back in the pool without too much of a break.

Here are a few troubleshooting guidelines for your pool heaters:

• The heater will not ignite.

If you are having a problem simply being able to ignite the heater and getting it to work properly, there are actually many things that you can do to try to remedy the problem.

One of the very first things you need to check in order to avoid spending a lot of unnecessary time is to make sure the switch is turned on. If it is turned on, you should move on and check the thermostat to make sure it is turned up to the desired temperature.

If this appears to be in working order, you then should check to make sure that the pump is running with a clean filter that has less than or equal to 16-psi on the pressure gauge. You may also want to check to make sure the gas valve is in the proper position and that the pilot light is lit.

You also should check that the plumbing and valves are all open and that the bypass has not only been installed, but also that it is properly adjusted. If you have checked on all of these things and still do not know what to do, you may want to contact a technician to take a look at the pool heaters for you.

• I am not able to get the pilot light on.

First, it is important that you understand that the problem could come from a variety of sources. It could be due to an inadequate air supply, low gas pressure or improper venting.

Check to see if the gas is turned on and make sure the propane tank or other fuel system is full. And, although many people may not know this, water runoff from the roof or sprinklers or could clog up the item.

This is far from being all of the problems that can occur with using pool heaters, but they are the more common problems. As a matter of fact, most of the problems that occur with these kinds of heaters stems from problems that arise from the lack of flow of the propane or other gas.

Don’t get discouraged while you are working on this. You will figure it out, but even if you don’t you can always call a trained professional who knows about pool heaters to fix it and show you what steps to take in the future.
