Pool covers are an important part of pool maintenance year-round.
How do you choose a pool cover for optimal use with your pool or spa? Manufacturers make covers in a variety of sizes and shapes and they fall into three main categories:
Winter Pool Covers are typically made of polyethylene or mesh. Some stop everything from getting into the pool while others allow water to drip through while filtering leaves and other debris. Those made of solid fabrics will need to be secured to the in-ground edge or deck with water-filled tubes or hooks. Above-ground covers can be draped and secured with wires and fasteners. Mesh type covers allow water or melting snow to penetrate while preventing solid matter like branches, leaves, etc. from passing through. The mesh systems are secured to the deck or edge like the solid fabric varieties.
Solar Pool Covers are multi-purpose. They reduce water evaporation, filter some debris, and can greatly increase water temperature. To maximize the benefits, these should be used every time the pool is not. They protect the surface from some debris while floating on the surface. Some pool owners prefer the solar blanket variety which is used in conjunction with a manual reel or electronic reel for installation.
SAFETY NOTE: Solar Covers Should Be Removed Completely Before Swimming for Safety Purposes!!!
Safety Pool Covers were created to prevent a person, or even an animal, from falling into the water. They can be solid or made of mesh. The difference between safety and winter covers is that the safety variety can support more weight. Objects cannot fall into water or slip under the cover. The important thing to remember is that it must be fastened securely to the deck for optimal protection.
